The meeting will be held at 11 am (New York time), which will be the first meeting of the Bangladesh interim government chief with the US President.

“On September 24, the Bangladesh government chief and the US president will hold the meeting at 11 am (local time) at the UN headquarters in New York,” councilor of Bangladesh Permanent Mission to the UN Fahmid Farhan told BSS.

Diplomats said the meeting of Chief Adviser Prof Yunus and US President Biden indicates that the US administration wants to enhance diplomatic and economic relations with the Prof Yunus-led Bangladesh’s interim government.

Through this talks, the US administration is sending a clear message to Bangladesh that it is keen to boost bilateral ties, they said.

Diplomatic sources said during the high level talks between Joe Biden and Prof Yunus, the two leaders will discuss in detail how diplomatic and economic relations could be enhanced in writing a new chapter in bilateral relations between Bangladesh and the United States.

They will also discuss the US support in implementing the reform agendas taken by the Bangladesh interim government.

Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain told BSS that he believes the Nobel Peace Laureate and a world-renowned personality like Prof Muhammad Yunus would play a positive role in leading the Bangladesh delegation and speaking for Bangladesh in the UN session.

So, he said, this session is very significant for Bangladesh.

A diplomat at the Bangladesh Permanent Mission to of the United Nations said once the US President gives a speech at the UNGA session, he hosts a reception in the afternoon of that day in honour of the heads of state and government joining the session.

Holding a bilateral meeting between the US President and the top leader of any country during the UNGA session is very rare, he said.

So far, the US President did not hold any meeting with any top leader of Bangladesh on the sidelines of the UNGA session, while the US president have always met and talked to the heads of state and government of Bangladesh at the reception hosted by the US President.

Besides, there was no meeting between the heads of Bangladesh government and the US top leader at the UN General Session.

About significance of the Biden-Yunus talks, the Bangladeshi diplomat said a US high-level delegation visited Dhaka on September 15 after the interim government took the charge of the government on August 8.

Within two weeks of the visit of the US delegation, he said, US President Joe Biden is going to hold a meeting with Chief Adviser of Bangladesh Prof Yunus.

The upcoming meeting in New York indicates that the US will provide all kinds of support to Bangladesh in the future, including reforms in various sectors after the political changeover, he added.

“Florida Prepares for Potentially Devastating Hurricane with Threat of Strong Winds and Storm Surge” https://english.ajkalnews.com/2024/09/24/florida-prepares-for-potentially-devastating-hurricane-with-threat-of-strong-winds-and-storm-surge/ https://english.ajkalnews.com/2024/09/24/florida-prepares-for-potentially-devastating-hurricane-with-threat-of-strong-winds-and-storm-surge/#respond Tue, 24 Sep 2024 12:18:52 +0000 https://english.ajkalnews.com/?p=58

Florida is bracing for what could become the most powerful hurricane to hit the U.S. this season, as a developing storm system in the Caribbean gains strength and threatens to bring life-threatening storm surges and hurricane-force winds to the Southeast later this week.

The storm, currently building in the Caribbean Sea, is expected to rapidly intensify into Hurricane Helene as it nears the coast. According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), the system, named Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine, is projected to move quickly, unleashing wind, rain, and storm surges across the Southeast before making landfall in Florida.

A hurricane watch is now in effect for Florida’s Gulf Coast from Englewood to Indian Pass, including Tampa Bay and Charlotte Harbor. The NHC’s latest update also includes tropical storm watches for areas north and south of the hurricane watch zone, stretching from Indian Pass to the Walton-Bay County line, and from north of Bonita Beach to Englewood. Additional tropical storm watches were issued Monday afternoon for Florida’s Dry Tortugas and part of the Keys, with a new watch in effect from Bonita Beach to Flamingo as of Monday evening.

In response to the looming storm, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for 41 of the state’s 67 counties, aiming to expedite preparations and streamline coordination between state and local authorities.

With limited time to prepare, Tampa General Hospital has begun installing a 10-foot flood barrier around its facility in anticipation of potential storm surges and possible shifts in the storm’s path.

As of Monday, the storm remained a cluster of showers and thunderstorms swirling over the western Caribbean Sea. The NHC forecasts the system to rapidly intensify, with expectations that it could become a hurricane by Wednesday night and potentially reach Category 3 strength.

The last Category 3 hurricane to hit the U.S. was Hurricane Idalia, which made landfall in Florida in August of the previous year. Idalia packed winds of 125 mph and caused record-breaking storm surges from Tampa to the Big Bend region. Like Helene, Idalia underwent a period of rapid intensification over the warm Gulf of Mexico waters, with its winds strengthening by 55 mph in just 24 hours.

While the NHC currently predicts landfall in Florida’s Big Bend region, meteorologist Mary Gilbert from CNN cautions that residents from Florida’s Gulf Coast to eastern Louisiana should remain on high alert this week.

“Rookie Jayden Daniels Guides Commanders to Victory Over Bengals on Monday Night Football” https://english.ajkalnews.com/2024/09/24/rookie-jayden-daniels-guides-commanders-to-victory-over-bengals-on-monday-night-football/ https://english.ajkalnews.com/2024/09/24/rookie-jayden-daniels-guides-commanders-to-victory-over-bengals-on-monday-night-football/#respond Tue, 24 Sep 2024 12:00:36 +0000 https://english.ajkalnews.com/?p=49 CINCINNATI — As Washington’s backup safety and special teams ace Jeremy Reaves left the lively visitors’ locker room, headphones on, he pointed toward quarterback Jayden Daniels and said two simple words:

“He’s different.”

Defensive tackle Jon Allen was even more emphatic.

“He is the answer,” Allen declared.

No one in that locker room disagreed. Not after a night where Daniels completed 21 of 23 passes for 254 yards and two touchdowns, leading the Commanders to a 38-33 win over the Bengals on “Monday Night Football.” His game-sealing 27-yard touchdown pass to Terry McLaurin, delivered under pressure from a blitzing defender, was a defining moment.

“I think he grew up tonight,” McLaurin said. “I’m so excited for him. As a rookie, when you make those throws, your confidence just skyrockets. And right now, his confidence is through the roof.”

With this victory, Washington (2-1) has now won two consecutive games and has scored on 14 straight drives, excluding kneel-downs. Daniels has been the spark the team needed, completing 80.3% of his passes over three games, throwing for 662 yards and two touchdowns without a single interception.

“He’s continuing to grow on the job,” Washington head coach Dan Quinn said.

In Week 2, Daniels led the team to a game-winning field goal, and on Monday, he threw a touchdown pass on his final full possession. His teammates have been praising him since the spring, and their confidence in the young quarterback has only grown stronger.

When asked what makes Daniels different from the quarterbacks he’s played with before, guard Sam Cosmi said, “The only word I can really say is hope. I believe. We believe.”

Even when the play clock was ticking down, Daniels remained calm, motioning to the sideline for the play call. His composure in those moments left a lasting impression on his teammates.

“It’s shocking how composed he is,” said Washington guard Nick Allegretti. “He doesn’t panic. He just stays focused and leads the huddle. His composure keeps the whole offense steady.”

Daniels was tasked with converting three crucial fourth downs—two through the air and one with his legs—and succeeded each time. A fourth-and-2 pass to rookie receiver Luke McCaffrey for 30 yards set up the Commanders’ first touchdown. A fourth-and-1 run in the fourth quarter led to a field goal.

The most significant play came on a fourth-and-4 from the Bengals’ 39-yard line with just over four minutes remaining. Daniels completed a 9-yard pass to tight end Zach Ertz, keeping the drive alive. Three plays later, facing a full-on blitz, Daniels launched a perfect 45-yard throw to McLaurin for a 27-yard touchdown.

McLaurin had asked offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury for the ball on that play. Daniels delivered.

“When we needed it most, Jayden took the hit and made the throw,” McLaurin said. “Those are big-time throws for a rookie.”

Daniels’ performance throughout the night was filled with clutch moments, but his first touchdown pass of the game was to an unexpected target—backup tackle Trent Scott, who caught a 1-yard pass in the third quarter.

“I was nervous as hell,” Scott admitted. “I just thought, ‘Don’t drop the ball.'”

While Daniels’ teammates aren’t surprised—Allen noted that it’s what he sees from him “every day in practice”—Daniels himself admits the experience has been a bit surreal.

“Yes, it’s all new to me,” Daniels said. “But I’ve put in the work, and I believe that what you do in the dark always comes to light

IMF reiterates to provide support in reform initiatives: Salehuddin https://english.ajkalnews.com/2024/09/22/imf-reiterates-to-provide-support-in-reform-initiatives-salehuddin/ https://english.ajkalnews.com/2024/09/22/imf-reiterates-to-provide-support-in-reform-initiatives-salehuddin/#respond Sun, 22 Sep 2024 13:50:12 +0000 https://english.ajkalnews.com/?p=42 Adviser to the interim government on the Ministries of Finance and Commerce Dr Salehuddin Ahmed today said that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) had reiterated their stance of providing support to Bangladesh in carrying out reforms in the financial sector.

“IMF provides us with major budget support. The IMF will also extend support to us in the reform initiatives that we’re carrying out,” he said.

The Finance Adviser was talking to reporters this afternoon after IMF Resident Representative Jayendu De met him at his Finance Division office at Bangladesh Secretariat today.

During the meeting, he said they also talked about the upcoming meeting with an IMF mission in this month where there would be more detailed talks.

Answering to a question, Dr Salehuddin hinted that the additional $3 billion loan that Bangladesh was expecting from the IMF would be separate in addition to the already approved $4.7 billion support package.

After the meeting with the IMF Resident Representative, French Ambassador to Bangladesh Marie Masdupuy, Korean Ambassador to Bangladesh Park Young Sik and Country Director of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) in Bangladesh Dr Valantine Achancho met him separately at his office.

The Adviser said France has technical experts in various sectors including in IT while Bangladesh has some ongoing projects with French financing worth more than 400 million Euro. “They will also provide us support in different sectors,” he added.

In line with the French investments to Bangladesh, he hoped that many other countries would come to Bangladesh.

When asked about $1.1 billion possible support to Bangladesh announced by French president last year in climate change adaptation, the Adviser said there was no discussion in this regard.

“We’ve new priorities and those might not match with the priorities of the previous Awami League government, he added.

About his meeting outcomes with Korean Ambassador, Dr Salehuddin said Korea is one of Bangladesh’s important development partners and its quality and standard of work is very good.

He said the rate of interest of Korean loans is 0.5 percent which can be repaid in 40 years while it is also regarded as one of the softest loans. “Most of their (Korea’s) works are done through international bidding and a competitive process,” he added.

“We’re also looking at some big projects with Korean financing,” added the Finance Adviser.

Referring to his meeting with the IFAD Country Director, the Adviser said IFAD had long been operating in Bangladesh in agricultural projects, in agricultural finance as well it had provided enough support in micro finance and micro credit. “They (IFAD) have many ongoing projects in Bangladesh and they will come up with more projects,” he said.

Especially, the Adviser said they have talked on post-flood rehabilitation, adding, “IFAD has assured us of considering necessary support in this regard.”

ERD Secretary Shahriar Kader Siddiky and other senior officials were present, among others, in the meetings.

UN to support Bangladesh reforms, flood rehab measures https://english.ajkalnews.com/2024/09/22/un-to-support-bangladesh-reforms-flood-rehab-measures/ https://english.ajkalnews.com/2024/09/22/un-to-support-bangladesh-reforms-flood-rehab-measures/#respond Sun, 22 Sep 2024 13:40:32 +0000 https://english.ajkalnews.com/?p=38 The United Nations will support Bangladesh in wide ranging areas including police and election reforms as the interim government rolls out major restructuring of the country’s institutions, said the UN’s resident coordinator in Dhaka.

The chief of UN in Bangladesh, Gwyn Lewis, came up with assurance when she paid a courtesy call on Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at his Tejgaon office here today.

During the meeting, they discussed reforms, corruption, floods, Rohingya crisis and the UN-led investigation on the July-August carnage.

Gwyn Lewis expressed her support for the reform initiatives undertaken by the interim government and she thanked Professor Yunus “for taking up extraordinary role” as the head of the post-revolution administration.

The Chief Adviser said this was the “most unifying moment” for the whole nation and the main job of his government was to “set an example” for everyone.

“This is a great opportunity for the country to reform the economy and fix almost every institution,” he said.

Gwyn Lewis enquired about the reforms in the security forces including police administration.

The chief adviser said the government has made police reform a top of its priorities.

He said the government was also committed to setting up an integrated national IT system, which will ease hassles and cut corruption in the country.

Prof Yunus said the government has also formed a commission to make major reform in the electoral system so that votes can be held in a free and fair manner.

Lewis said the UN-led investigation team has already started working on the murders and mayhem committed during July and August.

She said UN agencies, WHO and ILO, were looking at ways to help the injured victims and people who were traumatised by the events.

The UN resident coordinator said the UN has provided four million dollars for the post flood rehabilitation in the country’s eastern and southern region.

She said some 18 million people in Bangladesh have been hit by floods since the beginning of the monsoon and the UN was coordinating aid from the agencies and charities for the flood victims.

Prof Yunus sought UN help for instituting an early warning system for floods in South Asia.

They also discussed environmental, climate change and the Chittagong Hill Tracts issues, with Lewis outlining the aid work the UN agencies have done in the three hill districts.

Prof Yunus sought UN help for building a better future for the Rohingya children in the camps, saying “a whole generation of angry young people is growing up there”.

Govt servants must submit wealth statements by November https://english.ajkalnews.com/2024/09/22/govt-servants-must-submit-wealth-statements-by-november/ https://english.ajkalnews.com/2024/09/22/govt-servants-must-submit-wealth-statements-by-november/#respond Sun, 22 Sep 2024 13:36:36 +0000 https://english.ajkalnews.com/?p=34 Government servants will need to submit their wealth statements every year, instead of every five years as they were previously required.

Every government servant has to submit their wealth statements by November 30 this year.

However, starting from next year, the submission must be completed by end of December every year.

The government will not publicly disclose the submitted wealth information, but it may be revealed if ordered by the court or decided by a relevant authority.

The Ministry of Public Administration has amended the Government Servants (Conduct) Rules, 1979, to include these provisions.

Previously, employees were required to submit their asset statements every five years, but this rule was not strictly followed.

This directive applies to all government employees. Those who fail to comply will face disciplinary action as per conduct rules.

Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration, Mokhles Ur Rahman, shared these updates during a press conference at the Secretariat today.

He stated that the government made this decision to prevent corruption among public servants, and adherence to these rules is mandatory for all employees.

Employees in Grade 9 and above must submit their asset statements to the secretary of their respective/controlling ministries or divisions. Meanwhile, employees in Grades 10 to 20 will submit their statements to their appointing authorities.

In response to a question, Mokhles Ur Rahman emphasised that past practices should be forgotten, and the new policies set by the current government must be followed. He also clarified that the Right to Information Act-2009, will not apply to the disclosure of asset statements.

Earlier, the Ministry of Public Administration had issued instructions on September 1 regarding the submission of asset statements.

Social Security COLA could go up 2.5% in 2025, latest estimate Shows https://english.ajkalnews.com/2024/09/22/social-security-cola-could-go-up-2-5-in-2025-latest-estimate-shows/ https://english.ajkalnews.com/2024/09/22/social-security-cola-could-go-up-2-5-in-2025-latest-estimate-shows/#respond Sun, 22 Sep 2024 12:32:53 +0000 https://english.ajkalnews.com/?p=27 A cooldown in inflation will likely lead to a lukewarm cost-of-living adjustment for those receiving Social Security benefits.

Currently, it’s estimated that Social Security benefits could see a 2.5% so-called COLA hike in 2025. If correct, it would be the smallest cost-of-living adjustment in three years. The COLA hike was 3.2% in 2024.

The estimate is based on the latest inflation numbers for August, released on Sept. 11, and the inflation data for July. All that’s needed is the next round of inflation data for September.

The Social Security Administration releases the actual figure for the cost-of-living adjustment each year in October after more inflation data is known. The CPI for September is set to be released Oct. 10.

This year’s third-quarter inflation numbers will be compared with last year’s third quarter to get to the upcoming COLA figure.

The Consumer Price Index increased 0.2% on a seasonally adjusted basis in August, the same increase as in July, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Year over year, the CPI increased 2.5% in August before seasonal adjustment.

While some might find the latest estimate disappointing, a 2.5% COLA for Social Security benefits would be considered about average, according to Mary Johnson, an independent Social Security and Medicare policy analyst.

In 2023, retirees and others saw an 8.7% COLA bump for Social Security benefits, as well as Supplemental Security Income benefits. That was the biggest inflation adjustment since 1981 when the COLA hike was 11.2%.

In 2022, the cost-of-living adjustment for Social Security benefits was 5.9%.

The cost-of-living adjustment was merely 1.3% in 2021 — making it one of the lowest increases on record since 1975 when Social Security started automatic annual cost-of-living allowances. It was 1.6% in 2020.

Next year, those who receive an average retiree benefit of $1,870 in Social Security benefits could see an extra $46.75 a month — or $561 a year. But all that money won’t hit their wallets directly.

Medicare Part B premiums will go up in 2025, as well, and the premiums will be announced later this year. It’s possible that an extra $10 a month could go toward those premiums next year.

Earlier this year, Johnson noted, the Medicare Trustees estimated that the Part B premium would be $185 per month in 2025, an increase of $10.30 from $174.70 in 2024. The Part B premium, as well as any voluntary withholdings for taxes, are automatically deducted from the monthly benefit amount by the Social Security Administration.
